部屋に8匹の猿を入れます。 部屋の中央にははしごが設置されています。 そのはしごに登ると天井から吊るされたバナナ（注：正確にはbunch of bananasとあるので、バナナの房）を取れるようになっています。
猿がはしごを登ろうとすると、全ての猿に氷水が降り注ぎます。 しばらくすると、猿達は氷水をかけられたくないので、はしごを登る猿を攻撃するようになります。 その後、どの猿もはしごを登ろうとしなくなります。
元々いた8匹のうちの一匹を新しい猿に置き換えます。 新しく来た猿は、はしごとバナナを見ます。 何故、他の猿達がバナナを取りにいかないのかと不思議に思いつつも、新参者の猿はハシゴを登ろうとします。 すると、他の猿達はその新参者の猿をフルボッコにします。 新参者の猿は何故ボコボコにされたのかはわかりませんが、梯子を登ろうとするのをあきらめます。
元々いた8匹のうち、さらにもう一匹を新しい猿に置き換えます。 新参者の猿はハシゴを登ろうとしてボコボコにされます。 以前ボコボコにされた新参者だった猿も他の皆がやっているため、今回の猿をボコボコにする行為に加担します。 しかし、何故はしごに登ろうとする猿を攻撃しなくてはならないのかは全くわかっていません。

なかなか的を射ているので、さらに考察してみることにしました。
では、最初の猿が登った時に、他の猿にも均等にバナナを分けあたえるとどうなるか？
元の記事には明記されていませんが、はしごを登るのはかなり困難な作業だと思われます。もし簡単なら、氷水など気にせずに沢山の猿がはしごを登るでしょう。バナナはそれくらい魅力的ですから。
バナナは魅力的だけど、はしごを登るのは大変なので躊躇する、という前提でないとそもそもの話が成立しません。
そのはしごを登らなくてもバナナがもらえるなら？
そうすると梯子を登った猿はバカらしくなって自分から登らなくなります。
大変なはしご登りですから、登らなくてもバナナが貰えるのであれば、あえて登らなくなるのは当たり前のことです。誰かが登って、そのおこぼれにあずかっていたほうがずっと効率が良いのです。
誰もはしごを登らないので、結果として、誰もバナナが貰えなくなります。
猿を8匹も飼っているということは飼い主は見世物にしてお金を取ろうと思っていて、そのお金からバナナ代も出ているのですが、猿がはしごを登ってくれないから、見物客は面白くないのでお金を払いません。
そうすると飼い主も懐具合に困ってくるので、登る猿がいなければ、なんとかはしごを登らせるために全猿に冷水をかけ始めます。
そこで「これはたまらない」と、また勇気ある一匹がはしごに登るわけですが、今度は飼い主も懐がさみしいので、その猿にバナナは取らせるけれど、他の猿に与えるバナナの量は少なくします。
とりあえず前回のことで、全部の猿に氷水をかければ登ってくれる猿がいるということに気づいた飼い主は、猿が登らなければとにかく氷水をかけるようになります。
しかし、一度離れた見物客の心はなかなか戻らず、猿がたまにはしごを登ってもあんまりお金を払ってくれなくなっているので、飼い主の懐はあいかわらず潤いません。懐具合が厳しいので、登った猿に与えるバナナの量も減っていきます。
飼い主としては見世物の猿に死なれては元も子もないので、仮に登らないとしても、最低限のバナナは与えなければなりません。ですから、苦労してのぼった猿によって得られたお金の多くが、何もしない猿のバナナ代に消えることになっていきます。
そのうちにはしごを登る猿は、苦労して登って得られるバナナの量と何もしなくても与えられるバナナの量の不均衡、登ってもかけられる氷水に理不尽を感じて部屋から逃げ出します。
残ったのは常に氷水をかけつづける飼い主と、氷水をかけられても気にせずはしごにも登ろうとしない、冷たさへの耐性をつけた他力本願な猿だけになります。
このようにして、企業は競争力を失っていくのです。
そしてこれは、実話です。

読んでいただいた方は気づいていると思いますが、原文とわたしの考察とでは、バナナと氷水の持つ意味が変わっています。
原文でのバナナとは従業員全体の利益であり、氷水はこれを快く思っていない経営陣による罰や粛清です。
一方、わたしの考察ではバナナは単純に地位や金銭といった報酬であり、氷水は経営陣の叱咤です。
原文の氷水はそれを行うことに対する罰であるのに対し、わたしの考察ではそれを行わないことに対する罰になっています。
原文では動物学的考察のように話を進めていって、最後に、これは人間組織に対しての揶揄であることを明かしています。
わたしの考察は、この種明かしが既に行われた後なので、その種をもっと現実社会に照らし合わせるとどうなるか？ という観点で行っています。
原文のような会社は実際に存在し、このかなり酷い、いわゆるブラックと呼ばれる会社にわたしも在籍したことがあります。（現在、人権侵害や賃金不払いなどで訴訟を起こされていて、既に結審し、この12月に地裁で判決が下ることになっているようです）
ただ、わたしがいた会社ほどブラックであれば、気づいたら一目散に逃げてしまえば良いだけなのでそれほど問題ではないと考えています。
わたしにとっては、バナナを得るためにひたすら努力してもじわじわとバナナが減って行って、気づいたら何をしても全員が貰うバナナが同じになっていた、というのがずっとタチが悪いと感じます。これは資本主義下にある企業にもかかわらず、既に社会主義下と変わらなくなっていて、それが競争力を失っていくことは歴史から考えて明白だからです。
こういう会社は、すぐにあきらめたり投げ出したりしない強い心を持った勤勉な者ほど損をし、「これはダメだ」と見限るまでにかなりの貴重な時間を浪費することになるので、要注意です。

For owner, the worst of all is that the all monkeys died. Even if no monkey climb the ladder, he must give minimum bananas for them. So, many of the money obtained by the monkey climb the hard way is consumed as a cost of bananas for monkeys does nothing.
Soon, the monkey that climb up the ladder feels imbalance between amount of bananas he get when he climb up and when he don't, and feels unreasonable to the fact that he will be sprayed with ice water regardless of whether he climb or not. Finalｌy, he run away from the room.
All that remains are the owner who is spraying with ice water continuously, and monkeys never climb up the ladder, with tolerance to cold, always rely on others.
Thus, many company lost competitiveness.
