　昔、年よりの大きらいなとの様がいて、「６０さいになった年よりは山にすてること」というおふれを出しました。との様のめいれいにはだれもさからえません。親も子も、その日がきたら山へ行くものとあきらめていました。

Long long ago, There was a lord who is hating old people. He said "People who getting 60 years old are thrown away in the mountain." Anyone couldn't defy about his order, Parent, Child, everybody had given up to go against. If the day comes, everybody had gone to the mountain.

　 ある日のこと、一人の若い男が６０歳になった母親をせおって山道をのぼっていきました。気がつくと、せなかの母親が「ポキッ、ポキッ」と木のえだをおっては道にすてています。男はふしぎに思いましたが、何も聞かずにそのまま歩きました。

One day, a young man carried his 60 year old mother up the mountain. Inadvertently, he noticed that mother break a tree branch, and abandon to the road. He had wondering about it, but he began to walk without asking anything.

　 年よりをすてるのは深い深い山おくです。男が母親をのこして一人帰るころには、あたりはもうまっ暗やみ。男は道にまよって母親のところへ引きかえしてきました。

The place that thrown old people away is deep mountains. It was getting dark when a young man tried to return. A young man was lost his way, and went back to the mother.

　むすこのすがたを見た母親はしずかに言いました。「こんなこともあろうかと、とちゅうでえだをおってきた。それを目印にお帰り」。子を思う親のやさしい心にふれた男は、との様の命令にそむくかくごを決め、母親を家につれて帰りました。

The grandma saw her child, said "For this occasion, I had broke branches on the way. You should go back follow it". He had faced the mother's tender heart, he decided to defy their lord. He took his mother back to home.

　 しばらくして、となりの国から「灰でなわをないなさい。できなければあなたの国をせめる」と言ってきました。との様は困りはて、だれかちえのある者はいないかと国中におふれを出しました。男がこのことを母親につたえると、「塩水にひたしたわらでなわをなって焼けばよい」と教えられ、男はこのとおりに灰のなわを作り、との様にさし出しました。

After a while, The Lord of neighboring big country said "Make a rope with ash, Or your country are attacked". The lord is greatly perplexed, asked everybody "Is anyone there who has good idea?" A young man told his mother about this, she said "soak straws in the salt water, and make a rope with it, then burn it". A young man did it, and presented to the lord.

　 しかし、となりの国ではまたなんだいを言っていました。曲がりくねったあなの空いた玉に糸をとおせというのです。今度も男は母親に、「１つのあなのまわりにはちみつをぬり、反対がわのあなから糸を付けたアリを入れなさい」と教えられ、との様に伝えました。 すると、となりの国では「こんなちえ者がいる国とたたかっても、勝てるわけがない」とせめこむのをあきらめてしまいました。

But, The Lord of neighboring country had been saying the impossible again. "Thread a ball with winding hole".  A young man asked his mother again, then she taught that "Spread the honey around a hole one side, and put a ant with a yarn on the other side". He did it, and presented to the load again.

Then, The Lord of neighboring country thought that "I would not win, if I fight with this country there are people of wisdom", and gave up the attack.

　 との様はたいそう喜び、男を城によんで「ほうびをとらす。ほしいものを言うがよい」と言いました。男は、「ほうびはいりません。実は・・・」男は決心して母親のことを申し上げました。

The Lord had very happy, and called a young man to his castle. He said "I will give you a reward. Say what you want". A young man said "I want nothing. As a matter of fact...". A young man decided to tell about his mother.

「なるほど、年よりというものはありがたいものだ」と、との様は自分の考えがまちがっていたことに気づき、おふれを出して年よりをすてることをやめさせました。それからは、どの家でも年おいた親となかよくくらせるようになりました。

"Hmmm, Old people are valuable". The Lord had noticed that his idea was wrong, and put a stop to throw old people away. Since then, Everybody can live with their old parents.


姨捨山（おばすてやま）（長野地域 Nagano, Japan）


:Caution

姨（oba） means that mother's sister.
捨(sute） means that throw away.
山(yama） means that the mountain.

姥(uba） means that grandmother.

Therefore, According to the theory, It is a Ubasuteyama（姥捨山） not a Obasuteyama（姨捨山）.
